Kaizer Chiefs know that their pending case with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) would certainly dash their hopes of winning the DStv Premiership.
But the club’s assistant coach Arthur Zwane believes they can still give Mamelodi Sundowns a serious challenge for the league title.
With three games in hand, the Soweto giants are fourth on the log standings and trail, Sundowns by 16 points.
“We want to push in league games with the hope that the results will be in favour of us, and we can be up there come the end of the season competing for the number one spot. I think that’s the ultimate goal for us,” said Zwane.
“Yes, it looks like maybe it’s out of reach, but we still believe that anything can happen because that’s football, anything can happen, as you know, it’s never over until the fat lady sings.”
The Soweto giants will face TS Galaxy in the Nedbank Cup Last 32, and Zwane said the club’s goal is to end the six-year trophy drought.
“We’ll take one game at a time. And obviously, we are a team that needs to grind results. And we were hoping and wishing that we’ll go as far as we want to in the cup and be in the final and bring it home. And why not [win it], that’s our aim,” concluded Zwane.
The new PSL prosecutor Zola Majavu recently charged Chiefs after failing to pitch for the league matches against Golden Arrows and Cape Town City last month, citing an outbreak of the deadly coronavirus in their camp at Naturena, and the PSL dismissed the Soweto-based club’s request to have all their December matches postponed.
According to reports, Chiefs are set to forfeit the league games they abandoned against CT City and Arrows, with Majavu confirming that the “case has been earmarked for hearing on January 21 at 4 pm”.
However, Amakhosi made it clear that they are going to appeal the verdict to throw their request out of the window, and the club is unlikely to plead guilty after being been charged “concerning their non-fulfillment of the two fixtures as a result of the allegations that most of their players had tested positive.”
With the 2021 Africa Cup of Nation (Afcon) underway in Cameroon, the Premiership is set to resume on 15 February with Chiefs up against Cape Town.
