Angola’s Petro edge Downs
Neo Maema had a last gasp goal denied after a VAR check as Mamelodi Sundowns were edged 2-1 by Petro de Luanda in the first leg of the Caf Champions League quarterfinal.
Sundowns thought they had made their work in the return leg easier, only for a VAR check to show Mothobi Mvala had fouled an opponent in the build-up to the goal.
The South African champions will know they have their work cut out in the return leg in Pretoria next weekend.
Lyle Lakay had given them the advantage when his deflected freekick put them in the lead as early as the sixth minute.
But the Angolans replied nine minutes later when Tiago Azulao turned in a beautiful cross. Petro were back again at the stroke of halftime after Denis Onyango spilt a cross. Yano Duarte made no mistake from close range.
Sundowns were in control for much of the second half but could not get the equaliser.
Substitutes Kermit Erasmus and Maema combined very well towards the end. However, Maema’s well-taken strike was ruled out after a VAR review.
Sundowns were lucky early in the second half when Brian Onyango handled in the box, but Petro was denied a penalty after a VAR check.
The 2016 African champions, Sundowns, host Petro in Pretoria next Saturday.
