Stay away from amateur tournaments, Semenya warns professional footballers
Former Baroka and Polokwane City defender Thabiso Semenya has shared his thoughts on the trend of professional footballers who participate in amateur tournaments.
Semenya hosted his second annual Easter Tournament in Moletjie, Limpopo.
It was actually at the same tournament that players such as Lefa Hlongwane, Tebogo Makobela and Onyedikachi Ononogbu were fired by Black Leopards for taking part last year.
It is also a common trend across the country that players play in similar tournaments without their club’s approval.
“In terms of contractual obligations, each and every player must be responsible for his own contract,” said Semenya at the end of his tournament on Monday.
“I won’t stop someone from coming to play in my tournament, but they must know better. Some teams allow players from playing in such tournaments; some teams don’t.
“If your team doesn’t allow you, you must not do it. It’s for your family; football is for your family; it’s a business, so I wouldn’t advise anyone to do it against the team’s will,” he said.
