CAS dismisses Royal AM appeal
The Court of Arbitration for Sport [CAS] has dismissed an appeal filed by Royal AM to be declared the lawful winners of last season’s GladAfrica Championship.
Sekhukhune were crowned champions of South Africa’s second-tier on a technicality after being awarded three points from their game against Polokwane City. City were found to have breached the rules on fielding Under 23 players in the first division.
After getting no joy from the South African Football Association [Safa] and the High Court, Royal AM, who are now in the PSL after purchasing Bloemfontein Celtic’s status, sought the intervention CAS.
The sports tribunal based in Switzerland has now ruled as follows:
- CAS has no jurisdiction to hear the appeal filed by Royal AM Football Club on 7 September 2021.
- The costs of the arbitration, to be determined and served to the parties by the CAS Court Office, shall be borne by Royal AM Football Club.
- Royal AM Football Club shall pay the National Soccer League and Sekhukhune United FC a contribution of CHF 4,000 (R64 000) towards the legal fees and other expenses incurred in the present arbitration procedure. All other Parties shall bear their costs.
