Mngqithi singles out intelligent Maboe for praise

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi has hailed Lebo Maboe for his versatility and being a different player in the team. Since recovering from an injury that kept him on the sidelines for a lengthy period, the former Maritzburg United player has featured in various roles, helping Masandawana yield good results.

The 27-year-old has proven his flexibility as he can be deployed as a striker, central attacking midfielder, central midfielder and defensive midfielder.

“He is a very intelligent player, and he has the willingness to be deployed wherever because other players have an attitude when you play them out of position. If Lebo came to Sundowns as a striker and then says he does not want to play in any other position, what do we do when Peter Shalulile is our main striker?” Mngqithi said.

“He can play as a striker, he can play as a winger, can play as an attacking and central midfielder, and he has also played as a right-back, and he can also play as a left-back. He is a very important player for us, but his main position is central midfield, and he has what it takes to give us what we want in our game plan.”

Mngqithi urged his other players to follow Maboe’s attitude. “It is very important for players to be open-minded. Ours as coaches is to guide and mould what we think is important.”

Since returning from injury, Maboe has made 11 appearances out of a possible 12 for the Brazilians in all competitions.
