Afcon Wrap: Mhango makes history

Orlando Pirates striker Gabadinho Mhango created history by becoming the first Malawian player to score a brace at the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

The Flames registered their first victory in Group B of Afcon 2021 as they came from behind to beat Cosafa rivals Zimbabwe 2-1, thanks to Mhango’s brace at the Stade Omnisports de Bafoussam in Cameroon on Friday evening.

Zimbabwe’s goal came from Ishmael Wadi competing in the GladAfrica Championship for JDR Stars, courtesy of a cross from SuperSport United’s Onismor Bhasera in the first half in a game which had a post of Premier Soccer League (PSL) stars in action, including Richard Mbulu and Gerald Takwara.

Mhango walked away with the Man of the Match award. “We are delighted to have got our first win, and on an individual capacity, I feel honoured to be named Man of the Match,” he said.

“It was not an easy game considering Zimbabwe were a very good side. The tournament has been exciting, and performing well at such a stage is both fulfilling and exciting, and I want to thank my fellow players for the hard work we all put in achieving the important win.”

Meanwhile, Selim Amallah and Soufiane Chakla scored to ensure Morocco seal a 2-0 win over Comoros in Group C and book a place in the knockout stage.

And in the most anticipated top of the table clash in Group B, Senegal and Guinea played out to a goalless draw, while Gabon drew 1-1 against Ghana.
