Musona establishes himself as mainstay of FC Platinum’s title defence

Former Polokwane City and Sekhukhune United striker Walter Musona has established himself as FC Platinum’s mainstay as they march for their fourth title in the Zimbabwean PSL.

When Musona joined FC Platinum at the start of the season, coach Norman Mapeza said the 27-year-old lacked the required fitness level, restricting him to cameo appearances, mainly from the bench.

But Musona, brother to former Kaizer Chiefs goal-getter Knowledge Musona, has been getting stronger and better for the three-time Zimbabwean Champions.

Crucially, he has hit the gears to become the league’s top assister with nine assists and six goals on his tally in 17 appearances.

Musona and rookie forward Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya have contributed 15 goals to FC Platinum’s healthy goal difference, 30, the highest so far this season.

The goal difference is very healthy that it could easily count as an extra point if no team manages to catch up with them, which is unlikely.

And the ex-Chippa United coach Mapeza is pleased with how Musona has turned on his screws to lead his men’s forward-line towards that usually nerve-wracking home stretch.

“We have always known what he possesses, but, unfortunately, he lacked fitness when he returned to Zimbabwe,” Mapeza said.

“It’s evident that lack of game time at his previous club affected him, so I put him through robust training and a few appearances to assess him. Everything went well, and he is at his best.

“Now he is a regular in the team because of the character he always shows. I usually do not prefer singling one player out of a team because we are all one team. We aid each other in this system.

“But I appreciate that Walter has done well, and his presence has worked well to motivate and assist Thandolwenkosi (Ngwenya), our current leading goal scorer. The season is still on, and we remain with one goal.”

So far, Musona has made 17 appearances, of which six were from the bench, but he has already placed himself as a firm challenger to be among the season’s best eleven.
