Barker dreaming of a top four finish

Following the morale-boosting win over Kaizer Chiefs, Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker believes his team can win all their four remaining games in the DStv Premiership to secure a spot in the top four.

Stellies beat Chiefs 1-0 on Saturday courtesy of a Deano van Rooyen goal, which took their impressive tally to 39 points, level with fourth-placed Kaizer Chiefs. It meant the Cape Town side completed a double over the Soweto giants after winning the first leg on a similar scoreline.

The 54-year-old coach says they will draw courage from that result as they look to wind up the season in style.

“We want to get to 40 points as quick as possible. We want to secure a top-eight position, and who knows, with four games to go, we can dream and even finish higher in the top four position. We have to take confidence from this performance,” Barker said.

The former AmaTuks mentor praised his boys for showing commitment and work ethic against Chiefs. Amakhosi parted ways with Stuart Baxter a few days before the tie and had Arthur Zwane in charge on an interim basis.

“I think the players can be proud of what they did today: the commitment, the work ethic, the game plan and the execution. We are proud to beat a team like Kaizer Chiefs at home in front of the supporters,” he said.

“I would like to congratulate the players on a good performance. Well done to the players for executing,” Barker concluded.
