BREAKING NEWS: Mere set to join Galaxy

A day after announcing his departure from Swallows, veteran defender Vuyo Mere has already found a new home in the DStv Premiership.

Mere parting ways with the Soweto side came as a shock to many as the experienced campaigner had resolved a misconduct issue with the club and resumed training on Monday. His disciplinary matter was finalised most recently as the Birds’ hierarchy suspended him for alleged misconduct towards the end of 2021.

According to FARPost sources, Mere is set to join TS Galaxy as a free agent, and he is expected to sign a contract soon.

The 37-year-old spent two-and-half years in Soweto and played an instrumental part in defence when Swallows gained promotion to South Africa’s top-flight in 2022 by winning the GladAfrica Championship.

He only missed four matches as Swallows finished sixth in their first season in the DStv Premiership. Yet, Mere has only featured in six games in the current campaign.

Mere, who made his professional debut at the age of 17 for the now-defunct Hellenic, has over 400 appearances in the Premiership, turning out for Mamelodi Sundowns, Bidvest Wits and Platinum Stars.

He has enjoyed a glittering career – clinching two league titles with Sundowns and the MTN8 and Telkom Knockout with Stars. Mere also earned 10 international caps for Bafana Bafana.

The DStv Premiership is currently on a break due to the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Cameroon and will resume on 15 February.
