Ex-Chiefs star Lebogang Manyama on the move

FARPost can exclusively reveal that ex-Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Lebogang Manyama arrived at Cape Town City this morning [Wednesday] ahead of his reunion with the club.

Manyama was released by DStv Premiership giants Chiefs in June with several other senior players, including Bernard Parker, Dumisani Zuma, Samir Nurkovic, Lazarous Kambole, Daniel Cardoso, Leonardo Castro, Daniel Akpeyi, Kearyn Baccus and Anthony Agay.

FARPost reported last month that he was set to reunite with his former club – City. This publication can now confirm that the ex-Ajax Cape Town and SuperSport United star reported for training on Wednesday morning.

However, Manyama will have to go through rehab before he can join Eric Tinkler’s charges. He is currently nursing an injury after a tear on the meniscus. The 31-year-old was operated on recently and is set to be out for at least four weeks.

“He went through an operation last week and will be out for about four weeks. But he’s arrived in Cape Town ahead of his return to the club,” a source close to the player said.

Manyama had a memorable season at the club, clinching the player of the season award in the 2016/17 season. He then moved to the Turkish side Konyaspor before spending four years at Chiefs.

With the Mother City side gearing up for the CAF Champions League, Tinkler wants to assemble a well-balanced squad.

He will be hoping for better days ahead to stay injury-free and rediscover the form that once made him a household name. His final season in the black and gold of Amakhosi was hampered by injuries and subsequently dropping form. He made 98 appearances for Chiefs, scoring 15 goals and assisting a further 15.

The Citizens on Tuesday announced their second signing of the transfer window – Jordan Bender – who was previously in the books of Orlando City in the United States.

They also signed Marc van Heerden from Stellenbosch as they continue to beef up their squad for a long season.

Tinkler guides them against DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns on the opening day of the season – Friday, August 5.
