Chiefs announce new signing as ‘DVD’ also returns

Kaizer Chiefs have announced the signing of a new defender who was previously on the books of their local rivals in the DStv Premiership.

Mozambican versatile player Edmilson Dove is the latest acquisition by Amakhosi who are in the process of rebuilding the squad.

Dove, who is 28, has been training with the club for the past few weeks and has impressed the technical team. He joins on a two-year deal with a further one-year option.

The former Cape Town City player is able to play at wing-back and centre-back and will be eligible to play once his paperwork has been finalised.

Meanwhile, the club has also confirmed the return of former midfielder David ‘DVD’ Mathebula as head coach of their under 19 youth side. The 39-year-old will also serve as an assistant coach to the Reserve side.

“He will work with other Kaizer Chiefs Youth Development Academy coaches, including Jimmy Jambo and Tshidiso Letsholonyane, and will serve as coach Vela Khumalo’s assistant in the Reserve side that plays in the DStv Diski Challenge,” the club revealed in a statement on Thursday.

Mathebula played over 79 matches for Amakhosi between 2004 and 2011 before his loan move to Mpumalanga Black Aces. He started his career in 2002 at the now defunct Limpopo club Dynamos. Mathebula has also played for clubs such as Moroka Swallows, SuperSport United and Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM).

He started his coaching career at TTM, now Marumo Gallants, as co-coach alongside Mpho Maleka. The pair went on to win the 2021 Nedbank Cup under the supervision of coach Dylan Kerr who was unable to sit at the bench at the time due to a work permit.

Meanwhile, Chiefs clash with Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday in a potentially explosive encounter set for the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria. It’s the third round of the DStv Premiership.
