City fan slapped with three-year ban

A Manchester City fan has been punished for throwing a flare in a league game in May.

Phillip Maxwell has been slapped with a three-year ban after endangering the lives of players and officials in City’s dramatic 3-2 win over Aston Villa in their last Premier League game of the 2021/22 campaign.

The 29-year-old lost his cool after the Citizens scored an equaliser after trailing by two goals at the Etihad Stadium.

A police spotter captured him throwing the missile over the heads of fans and stewards following Rodri’s low-driven shot which flew past Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen in the 78th minute of the clash.

The victory ensured that Pep Guardiola’s troops successfully defended their crown with 93 points from 38 games – edging rivals Liverpool by a single point.
