Conte refuses to commit future to Tottenham

Despite securing a Champions League spot on the final day of the Premier League season, Antonio Conte has refused to commit his future to Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham beat Norwich City 5-0 at Carrow Road, ensuring they edged north London rivals Arsenal for fourth place.

After the game, the Italian said he had “a lot of emotions” after the season and that he would rest for four or five days before meeting with the club to find a “solution” to his future.

Speaking after the Norwich win, Conte said: “Now I think for me, the club and the players it’s good to have three, four, five days of rest and then the mind will be very clear.

“Then you can consider the whole season. I think you have to be very calm before talking.

Now there’s a lot of emotions in my mind, my heart, for me, for the club and for everybody.

“For this reason, it’ll be very good to rest for four or five days and then have a good meeting with the club to find the best possible solution.”

Later, he told Sky Sports that finishing fourth was one of the best achievements of his career.

“I have to be honest; I think it (finishing fourth) is one of the most important achievements in my career.

“Sometimes it’s not only when you lift a trophy to be satisfied; I think we reached the maximum level that we dreamed of in November because then the situation was not so good for many reasons. The club changed the coach, and with injuries, we tried to find a good solution.

“I think we’ve done a really good job, and for me, this is a big achievement in a league that is very difficult because here you find the best players and best coaches.

“I’m happy even though I didn’t lift any trophy this season.”

Conte only became Spurs manager in November, replacing Nuno Espirito Santo.

Victory over Norwich — in which goals came from Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski, and Harry Kane — completed a remarkable turnaround in a season which looked to be heading towards mediocrity.

Conte has repeatedly refused to commit to the club beyond the end of the season. He also seemingly threatened to resign after defeat to Burnley in February.

Son’s two goals on the final day ensured that he would share the Golden Boot with Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.
