D-day for Mosimane at Al Ahly

It’s D-day for Pitso Mosimane at Al Ahly with the club set to make a decision on his future on Friday.

According to an Egyptian football journalist, Al Ahly president Mahmoud El-Khatib may not be able to defend Mosimane this time as “some influential figures within the club want him gone.”

Speculation has been rife this week that Mosimane’s time at the helm of Africa’s biggest club may be coming to an end after he failed to defend the Caf Champions League title.

“It’s crazy here, Ahly fans and some people within the board feel the club shouldn’t have lost the final based on the investment they’ve made into the club.

“The president has always supported Pitso but unfortunately this time the people around him don’t want the coach to stay. So it’s tricky,” the journalist said.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach has enjoyed a successful 20-month spell, winning two successive CAF Champions League trophies.

Mosimane, who has been in Morocco this week completing his CAF Pro License, is expected in Cairo, and will hold a crucial meeting with El Khatib on Friday about the way forward for the club.

Mosimane came close to making history by clinching three successive CAF Champions League titles, but the Cairo giants fell 2-0 to Wydad Casablanca.

Last week, he admitted he has suffered High Blood Pressure because of the demands that come with coaching Africa’s biggest football club.

In an interview with Prime Sports With Mahlatse, the 57-year-old acknowledged that being at the helm of the Club of the Century was taking a toll on his health.

“I don’t know how I’m doing it; thank God I’m still there. It’s a difficult environment Mahlatse, and it is tiring. It takes a lot of my energy,” Mosimane said.

“Coaching has a lot of stresses and sicknesses – I’ve suffered from those things – I must tell you the truth. I’ve suffered from fatigue, and I’ve suffered from High Blood Pressure. It’s the nature of the business; it’s the nature of the club.”
