Daine Klate’s assessment of Chippa United’s squad

The newly appointed Chippa United coach says he is happy with the crop of players he will be working with at the club as he looks forward to his debut season as a DStv Premiership head coach.

The former Orlando Pirates star revealed his happiness about the squad assembled by the Gqeberha outfit. The Chilli Boys recently unveiled 16 signings to bolster their squad ahead of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership.

“The composition of the squad looks very good. For the most part, whoever we found on the team is more than capable of being part of the team. The number of changes wasn’t much, but I think, for the most part, we were very happy about the composition of the squad,” Klate told the media.

“All you need as a coach is a bit of quality which I think we have, and obviously, the games will tell us what needs strengthening. I think two players a position or more as a coach, you can’t ask for more.”

“You need to create competition. I can improve them as a coach and mentor. I don’t think we can complain about having a team that will be unable to compete.”

The ex-SuperSport United winger further revealed how the preseason preparations are going on, on their side, with the league starting very soon.

“The preparations have been going very well. A week from the first match, you can never have enough time as a coach to prepare, but I think the first match will give us an idea of where we are and need to go.”

“The week in Durban was important for us. It gave us a good idea. We played four friendly matches, giving us an idea of where we are and where we need to go. It helped a lot. Learning about the team allows you to discover different personalities. It gives us an indication of who we are working with, what needs to happen and what needs to be instilled in boys,” Klate added.

Klate’s first test will be against his former coach Gavin Hunt who returned to his former employer SuperSport United for a second tenure.
