Ellis demands consistency from Banyana

Banyana coach Desiree Ellis has called on her charges to be consistent ahead of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations to be held in Morocco next month.

South Africa, the five-time runners-up in the competition will be aiming to clinch their first silverware and Ellis is confident the ‘golden generation’ have all it takes to be champions and eventually qualify for the World Cup next year in New Zealand and Australia.

“Consistency more than anything, this team can play, this team has quality, this team can score goals, but it’s the consistency. We showed in 2018, we showed what we capable of, that is what we need to get right, to stay consistent and make sure we execute our plans,” Ellis told the media.

“If we don’t concede, we’ll always create chances, and we need to take those chances we create and win matches.”

Ellis also revealed that their aim is to at least reach the tournament’s semi finals to take an easy route to qualify for the World Cup.

“Its important that we finish top of the group, the four semi finalists qualify for the world cup, but there is the other route and you really don’t want to go to that route, its difficult. So we have to make sure that we get on of those four spots and get to the semis.”

“There is pressure when it comes to the national team, we’ve obviously set our goals, we know what’s at stake. Pressure will always be there, its all about how we manage the pressure, to turn it around and get the result and that’s going to be important,” she added.
