Ex-SuperSport star slams Tshwane side for lack of ambition

Retired Senegalese forward Mame Niang says SuperSport United’s continued release of its best players to Mamelodi Sundowns is a sheer lack of ambition.

Niang played for both clubs in South Africa and believes Matsatsantsa are now a pale shadow of the team that won three successive titles between 2007/08 and 2009/10 because of failing to retain their top players.

Denis Onyango, Grant Kekana, Aubrey Modiba, Teboho Mokoena and most recently, Sipho Mbule are some players who crossed the floor from SuperSport to the Brazilians.

“If SuperSport United continues to sell its best players to Sundowns, they don’t want to challenge the defending champions for the league title; this means Sundowns will keep dominating the domestic league in SA,” Niang said told FARPost from his Norway base.

He was reacting to Mbule’s transfer which was announced on Friday, adding that it gives the club an edge over other teams in the PSL.

Niang hailed Namibian forward Shalulile for his consistent scoring form. “I mean, look at Shalulile; he’s got special movements and the ability to score goals. I’ve been impressed by the strong statement he’s managed to make in the Premier Soccer League,” he said.

In Norway, the 38-year-old is currently coaching his former team, Kongsvinger’s junior team. He describes it as a fulfilling challenge that is helping him garner experience as a coach.

The 2005/06 golden boot winner with Moroka Swallows does not hide his desire to return to South Africa for a coaching role.
