Fifa throws curveball at Zim govt

Fifa has urged the Zifa council to reinstate suspended president Felton Kamambo and general secretary Joseph Mamutse, saying they should be back in “full” control of the football governing body if Zimbabwe entertains chances of returning to international football.

“As discussed in the past weeks, it is important that in the context of the aforementioned EGM, the Zifa members and delegates understand fully the decision of the FIFA council taken on 24 February. Especially they shall be reminded of the cumulative conditions imposed by the FIFA council in order for the Zifa suspension to be lifted, including “confirmations to FIFA that Zifa and its management led by President Kamambo and GS Mamutse is back under their full and unconditional control,” the email seen by FARPost reads.

FIFA says Zimbabwe would only return to international football if the Zifa board is reinstated.

The country’s Fifa suspension now looks unlikely to be lifted ahead of the June Afcon qualifiers with Sports Minister Kirsty Coventry saying the Zifa executive remains suspended until the courts have finished proceedings.

The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) this week told The NewsReport that the lifting of the suspension is not “priority”.

Zimbabwe was this week grouped with Morocco, South Africa and Liberia for the 2023 Afcon qualifiers.
