Football match cashiers hide money in underwears

Police in Malawi arrested four cashiers on suspicion that they hid an equivalent of R7,000 in their underwears at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on Saturday.

The cashiers were handling gate collections for a TNM Super League game between Mighty Wanderers and Sable Farming FC when the police caught them red handed.

Police search established that some of the cashiers hid the money in their underwears.

Malawi’s Southern Region Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Beatrice Mikuwa told Sunday Times newspaper that the suspects are on remand at Soche Police Station for further questioning.

“They hid the money in their panties [underwears]. We have taken them to Soche Police to investigate the issue further,” she told Times.

Super League of Malawi General Secretary Williams Banda told the newspaper that his body engaged CIDs following concerns over gate revenue.

“It is an ongoing exercise aimed at exposing every stakeholder involved in gate fraud. The idea is to empower the teams to get all their benefits,” he told Times.

Cases of gate taking fraud and vandalism are common at match venues in Malawi.
