There has been a major development in the investigation into the death of Argentine legend Diego Maradona.
A criminal case was opened against eight medical personnel who were looking after the football great before his ultimate passing due to a heart attack in November 2020, aged 60.
Following several investigations and compiling of evidence, a judge has ordered that a culpable homicide trial must be opened after it was discovered that the treatment found in Maradona’s treatment had a lot of “deficiencies and irregularities”.
He had been recovering at home from surgery on a brain blood clot earlier that month (November).
In 2021, a panel of 20 experts were appointed to examine his death and they found that Maradona’s medical team acted in an “inappropriate, deficient and reckless manner”.
The panel further explained that the former Napoli player would have had a better chance of survival with adequate treatment in an appropriate medical facility.
Among those facing charges are Maradona’s neurosurgeon and personal doctor, Leopoldo Luque, a psychiatrist, psychologist, two doctors, two nurses and their boss – they have all denied responsibility for his death.
