Ex-Liverpool winger joins Chicago Fire

Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit Chicago Fire have signed Switzerland winger Xherdan Shaqiri on a deal until 2024.

According to the MLS club Fire, Shaqiri is the most expensive signing in the club’s history.

The 30-year-old winger moves to the United States of America after parting ways with French club Olympique Lyonnais.

Shaqiri joined Lyon from Liverpool in August and scored twice in 16 matches in all competitions for the Ligue 1 side.

Lyon confirmed that Chicago paid 7 million euros to acquire the services of Shaqiri.

“Xherdan is a game-changing player and someone who will bring joy to our supporters and the city of Chicago,” Chicago’s sporting director Georg Heitz said in a statement.

“As one of the most accomplished Swiss athletes of his generation, Xherdan joins us at a very important time for the club and fully believes in what we are aiming to accomplish.”

Shaqiri won the Uefa Champions League and Premier League titles with Liverpool, and he had stints at Inter Milan and Bayern Munich.

The attacker has earned over 100 caps for Switzerland and played in three World Cups and two European Championships at an international level.

Shaqiri also played a vital role when his nation booked a place in this year’s World Cup in Qatar.
