FIFA calls for action regarding Mexico match violence

World football governing body, FIFA have joined the Mexican Football Association and Concacaf in condemning the barbaric incident which saw atleast 26 people injured when violence broke out among the crowd at a top-flight match in Mexico.

The Liga MX encounter between Queretaro and Atlas was abandoned after 63 minutes when fighting spilled onto the field at La Corregidora stadium.

Some players attempted to calm fans down before they were sent to the locker room.

“FIFA is shocked at the tragic incident that took place at La Corregidora stadium in the city of Queretaro during the fixture between Queretaro and Atlas. The violence was unacceptable and intolerable,” they said in a statement on Sunday.

“Once again, FIFA would like to stress that violence should have absolutely no place in football and we will continue working with all parties to eradicate it from our game.”

Three people were seriously injured, with 26 supporters in total taken to hospital.
