It’s just a rumour: Benni on Chiefs, Pirates links

Bafana Bafana’s all-time top goalscorer Benni McCarthy has responded to rumours linking him to either of the Soweto giants.

Amid continued speculation linking him with a move to Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in recent weeks, the former Cape Town City coach said the news are just widespread rumours.

This comes after the 44-year-old mentor parted ways with AmaZulu almost two months ago following a string of poor results.

Amakhosi are on the hunt for a new head coach following the sacking of Stuart Baxter late last month, while Mandla Ncikazi and Fadlu Davids jobs are on thin ice as Bucs have been so inconsistent this season despite their good run in the Caf Confederation Cup tournament.

McCarthy revealed that he has not been contacted by both sides since his departure from Usuthu.

“Me being linked to both teams is just a rumour. Don’t take anything serious about the rumours. Last time I checked, Arthur Zwane was still in charge of Chiefs and he’s doing a fantastic job. So, I think that job is not vacant because it’s occupied by Zwane. Well done to him, he deserves this opportunity and I wish him all best for the remaining two league matches,” Benni told the media on Friday.

“But, it’s always nice being linked with these big teams. It’s a privilege having your name always in there and that shows you that you are on the right track because you are doing something right which is great. I will continue to do that wherever I am, striving for success and hopefully one day I’m at the perfect club with the perfect management that wants the same things as I want.”

On his former club – the Buccaneers – he added: “My old club Orlando Pirates, I wish them the best in the second leg of the Confederation Cup. Coach Mandla [Ncikazi] is a great guy and a good friend of mine. So, I want nothing but success for him and his future endeavours.”
