‘It’s not over’ — Richards Bay skipper fires GladAfrica title warning to teammates

Richards Bay captain Katleho Maphathe has warned his Richards Bay teammates that the race for the GladAfrica Championship title is far from over. On Sunday, the curtain comes down on South Africa’s second-tier, and the KZN side goes into the final round of matches, holding a two-point lead over Pretoria University FC.

The Natal Rich Boyz are in pole position to gain promotion to the DStv Premiership next season after their 2-1 victory over TS Sporting in the penultimate round this past weekend. Nonetheless, Maphathe has warned his teammates not to be carried away by the narrow advantage over AmaTuks.

“The job is not done yet; you know anything in football can happen, so we have to be very focused and not think we are promoted already; we have to make sure we score first and defend well as a team,” Maphathe told FARPost. The Free State-born defender couldn’t hold back his excitement over the possibility of playing in the topflight next season.

“I can’t wait to play in the PSL; it will be a dream come true, and maybe playing in the PSL might come with a chance to play for Bafana Bafana, it’s my biggest wish to represent my country,” added the former Roses United star. Although Richards Bay hold a two-point lead advantage to get their hands on the GladAfrica Championship trophy, Maphathe is aware of the danger of letting complacency creep in.

“We have to approach every game with a winning mentality, and I think that’s the only thing that can get us the job done, so we must work as a team to put ourselves in a better position of collecting all the three points, the technical team has been helping us, so we are very strong mentally going into this match,” Maphathe concluded.

Richards Bay will host Cape Town Spurs in the final match of the season at King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday; kick-off is at 15:00.
