Baroka welcome another new face

Baroka FC have acquired the signature of Thabang Mokoena as the team prepares for the new season after being relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Mokoena, who was part of the Sekhukhune United side that gained promotion to the DStv Premiership in the 2020/21 season, joins Bakgakga ba ga Mphahlele on a two-year deal after spending last season with Jomo Cosmos.

The 29-year-old centre-back played much of his football in the second tier of South African football, having featured for Richard’s Bay United, JDR Stars and Cape Town All Stars.

The Vincent Kobola-coached side has already parted company with 10 players, including Evidence Makgopa, who joined Orlando Pirates ahead of the next campaign. They roped in Luciano Van Heerden from ABC Motsepe League side Highlands Park on a three-year deal.

The 2019 Telkom Knockout Championships are also believed to have secured the signature of FARPost Cup Player of the Tournament Sekgobela Masilo, who did enough to impress the technical team in his three weeks of training with the Limpopo-based side.

Club boss Khurishi Mphahlele this week confirmed that they had been impressed by 20-year-old Masilo, who was also on the radar of Mamelodi Sundowns.

Bakgaga first hogged the limelight in 2011 after claiming a famous victory against the Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup. They gained promotion to the PSL in the 2014/15 season.

With his wealth of experience that saw him amass 23 appearances to help Babina Noko gain promotion to the elite league in the 2020/21 term, the former Richard’s Bay defender will be vital as Baroka seeks to make an automatic return to the top league come next season.
