AmaZulu boss clears the air on discarded trio

AmaZulu president Sandile Zungu has cleared the air around three players released in June. Usuthu were the first PSL outfit to announce a massive clearout, with 15 players being shown the exit door shortly after the end of the 2021/22 season.

Luvuyo Memela’s exit raised eyebrows as he had been one of the most valuable players for Usuthu in the last two seasons. The former Orlando Pirates midfielder led the team in the attack, scoring all-important goals, and it came as a surprise when he was among the players leaving the club.

Interestingly, in the last couple of days, there have been talks of him returning to the team as it was believed both camps agreed to reunite. The club’s boss, Zungu, has given more clarity on the situation as he sang Memela’s praises.

The 34-year-old won two awards at the club’s end-of-the-season ceremony – top goal-scorer and player’s player of the season. “Luvuyo Memela was one of the players that did well for the club last season. Even his teammates recognised him by voting him as player’s player of the season for AmaZulu.

“We were very pleased with him, but his contract came to an end, we had to negotiate, but unfortunately, we couldn’t agree,” Zungu explains.”We then allowed him to join the club of his choice, but we are thankful to him for what we did for the club, and we know wherever he goes, he will be a good addition to that team. He still has a lot to offer, so we won’t be surprised if he punishes us whenever he comes against us.”

“We’ve been told other clubs want him, and we wish him all the best.” The duo of Thabo Qalinge and Pule Ekstein has reportedly been training with the team’s diski side. The AmaZulu supremo, Zungu, said they couldn’t get what they were hoping to get from them and are no longer part of the team. He added that they were training to ensure they are paid as per contract until they agreed on a settlement.

“As for Thabo Qalinge and Pule Ekstein, we didn’t get what we wanted from them. We tried to give them a chance, but we didn’t get what we were looking for, but we were obligated to pay them; hence they are still training with the club but won’t be playing. We are just still paying them until we reach an agreement.”
