Ambassadors were crowned the 2021 champions of the Phillys Games after beating 18 Mambas 3-0 on penalties in the final at Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa on Monday afternoon.
Tactically, Ambassadors looked like the better team. Still, Mambas provided the spectators and viewers with the entertainment and kasi flavour in an innovative final which had video referee assistance, similar to VAR.
Ambassadors, who came into the 30th edition of the final as the underdogs, were wasteful with an avalanche of chances throughout the encounter. And Mambas only came into the party later on in the game, pushing for victory but failed to find the back of the net like Ambassadors as the two teams could not be separated after 90 minutes.
In the shoot-out, Mambas missed all their spot-kicks with captain Kgotso Molefe, known as “Pro” also failing to score as Ambassadors walked away with R210 000 and a trophy for their efforts.
Mambas reached the final after thrashing Doornkop Students 4-1 over two legs in the semi-finals, while Ambassadors knocked out the defending champions, Isithembiso, with a 3-1 aggregate win.
Mambas coach Bushin Khubeka was evidently disappointed. “It wasn’t to be, compliments to Ambassadors, we created chances and took the game to them, it was a fair game, but it was not our day,” he said after the game.
