Avenging Buffaloes want Sundowns in COSAFA qualifier final

Green Buffaloes coach Charles Haalubono has made it clear that he wants to face Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies in Saturday’s Hollywoodbets COSAFA Women’s Champions League zonal qualifier final in order to take his revenge.

The Zambian side cruised to the tournament’s finals after defeating Comoros’ Olympic De Moroni 4-0 on Tuesday.

Banyana Ba Style have already qualified for the CAF Women’s Champions League as they are the current title holders.

Downs Ladies will wait for the Costa do Sol and Double Action Ladies encounter today (12:00) to decide who are the Group A winners to face Buffaloes in the finals. However, Botswana’s Double Action will have to win their game by eight goals clear in order to leapfrog Group leaders Sundowns, who has four points with a great goal difference.

Costa do Sol of Mozambique lost their first game 8-1 to the red-hot Brazilians which will give their opponents the hope to reciprocate Downs Ladies’ result.

But if Sundowns progress to the finals, that means Buffaloes will qualify for the 2022 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions Leagues.

Meanwhile, Haalubono badly wants to put Sundowns to the sword at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium, as they eliminated them in the semi-finals of the last year’s edition.

“I want to face Sundowns in the finals because they beat us last time in the semi-finals and you know Sundowns is the biggest team in Africa,” Haalubono told the media.

“If you want to be the best you have to play with the best. So, we should learn from Sundowns because that’s what I believe in.

“They will be able to give us good lessons, that’s just my prayer.”

Buffaloes had eight of their players in Zambia’s bronze medal-winning squad in the just-ended CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) held in Morocco.

The COSAFA Zonal qualifier finalists had four defenders from the WAFCON tournament namely Anita Mulenga, Lushomo Mweemba, Martha Tembo and Agness Musase.

Midfielders Ireen Lungu and Martha Tembo, who played in all the matches just like Musase, are also in Durban together with Judith Soko and Natasha Nanyangwe.

The CAF Women’s Champions League is scheduled for Morocco later this year.
