Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Patrice Motsepe said on Sunday revealed that the next Africa Cup of Nations will be played in Ivory Coast in 2024, and not 2023 as initially scheduled.
The tournament was set to take place in June/July 2023 but the unfriendly weather conditions in the West African country led to CAF’s decision.
CAF had announced that it would move the finals from their traditional January/February slot to June/July in a bid to avoid repeated disputes with European clubs forced to release players in the middle of the season.
“January is not the ideal time because of the European clubs, but it is the only choice we have,” Motsepe told the media in Rabat, Morocco on Sunday.
CAF said there are no plans to permanently move the finals back to January/February given the contrasting weather patterns across the continent at different times of the year.
Meanwhile, Motsepe has announced that the African Super League will be launched in August 2023, with the prize money racking up to $100m.
The format of the tournament yet or how the teams for the Super League will be selected is yet to be revealed by the CAF.
