Cosmos relegation down to poor planning – Zwane

Former Jomo Cosmos winger Arthur Zwane says that while Jomo Cosmos’s relegation is a sad development in the local game, it is all down to “poor planning”. Ezenkosi went into their game against TS Sporting on Saturday needing maximum points while hoping Pretoria Callies would lose against Polokwane City.

However, the former PSL side drew 1-1 with TS Sporting as Callies beat City 2-0 to seal their fate. Cosmos, owned by the legendary Jomo Sono, will now play in the ABC Motsepe League next season. Zwane, who started his senior career with the club in 1992, said it was a long time coming because of a lack of foresight.

“It’s sad for the fact that they gave me a break, allowed me to showcase my talent and many other players like Son of the Soil – coach Pitso Mosimane – who is doing well for himself and the country. Representing the country in Egypt where it is difficult to survive as a coach, but he’s doing well,” Zwane said.

“Bad day for South African football, Cosmos has a rich history, but maybe these are results of poor planning because the game has evolved at the end of the day; the game has changed.” Sono has been known to want to do everything by himself, failing to create sustainable structures to run the iconic club.

Zwane admitted that their drop was bound to happen because they languished in the second tier’s bottom half in the last three seasons. “You could see it coming; I think they’ve been languishing in the bottom half of the GladAfrica Championship log for the past three seasons. They’ve been in position 14,15,” Zwane added.

The 48-year-old urged other teams to view Jomo’s downfall as a lesson because it can happen to any team. “It’s sad, but it’s a lesson to other clubs that there are no shortcuts in this game at the end of the day. That’s unfortunate; I wish we could help a team of that calibre not go down because the league they will participate in is not easy.

“The chances of coming back are very slim. Unfortunately, they are gone; tough luck, that’s part of the game, that’s the nature of the game, but I feel sorry for him.” Cosmos have accumulated 22 points from 28 matches this season.
