Mamelodi Sundowns sealed their fifth league title when they played a goalless draw against Cape Town City at the Loftus Stadium in Pretoria.
Sundowns needed a point to wrap up the 2021/22 season with four games to spare. This is the earliest PSL title victory in terms of remaining matches since Sundowns were confirmed champions with five games to play in 2006/7.
Sundowns co-coach Rulani Mokwena said it was a joy to seal it in front of their fans.
“Congratulations to the Sundowns family, it’s good to have the title wrapped up in front of them, but we are happy for them,” Mokwena said in a post-match interview.
The draw meant they took their tally to 58 points, with second-placed Royal AM on 45 points, four games before the curtain comes down on the 2021/22 season.
Mokwena credited the support from the club’s management and the fans for spurring the team on.
“The support has been incredible in the good and bad moments,” he said. He added that the players had been incredible all season.
“The football players have been magnificent; what they have achieved on the pitch is incredible.”
Sundowns won the MTN8 Cup earlier this season, and the league title becomes their second trophy of the season. Sundowns were knocked out of the quarterfinals of the Caf Champions League on Saturday.
Mokwena said they would now go for the Nedbank Cup to complete the treble.
