Ex-Chiefs defender training with SuperSport

After parting ways with Kaizer Chiefs upon the expiry of his contract in June, a Ex-Chiefs defender has now resurfaced at Tshwane side SuperSport United.

The DStv Premiership side recently acquired the services of former Orlando Pirates captain Thulani Hlatshwayo on a two-year deal.

News reaching FARPost is that former Bafana Bafana defender Ramahlwe Mphahlele began training with Matsatsantsa on Wednesday morning in order to keep fit while he continues with his search for a new club.

Mphahlele and Chiefs parted ways in June after they couldn’t agree on a new deal at Naturena. The 32-year-old spent six seasons at Chiefs following his much-publicised move from Mamelodi Sundowns in 2016.

He played over 128 matches in all competitions for the Soweto giants scoring six goals in the process. There are no indications of a move yet for Mphahlele who is rumoured to have attracted interest from various teams.

Amongst others, the Limpopo-born player has played for teams such as Moroka Swallows, Mamelodi Sundowns and spent some time on loan at the University of Pretoria.

He won two League titles with Mamelodi Sundowns in 2013/13 as well as the 2015/16 season under coach Pitso Mosimane. Mphahlele was part of the Chiefs side that finished as runners-up during the 2020 CAF Champions League, losing to Egyptian Giants Al Ahly in the final.

The Turfloop School of Excellence product has also played 14 times for the South African national team, Bafana Bafana.

There is no word from SuperSport United on whether they would be engaging in contract negotiations with the player who is now a free agent.

It will also be interesting to see what his former coach at Kaizer Chiefs Gavin Hunt who is now in charge of the club will make of his performances at training.

At Naturena, Mphahlele was regarded as one of the leaders, often captaining the team.
