Mark Mayambela Cup roars to life

The Mark Mayambela Cup roars to life in Cape Town as the former Orlando Pirates winger looks to create a platform for upcoming footballers in his hometown.

The tournament takes place over the Easter holidays and will be staged at the Khayelitsha Soccer and Rugby Stadiums in the Mother City.

Competition sponsors Hollywood Bets this week announced that the winner will take home R30 000.

“We aim to make sure young talent is not wasted. These boys need guidance; there are many things that they come across like substance abuse and gender-based violence (GBV),” Mayambela told FARPost.

“It’s also an opportunity for the boys to be scouted and showcase what they’ve got in the field. The exposure will also help get teams and have an opportunity to play in better leagues.” Besides football, Mayambela said LoveLife – a youth-focused HIV prevention initiative – would also give a talk to the players.

“The Community Cup is not only about playing football; it also educates on how to make better choices. On the day our partners LoveLife will be available educating about real-life situations and health.”

“I believe these boys will improve their physical and mental health through grassroots football,” said Mayambela, who recently hung his boots.

The 34-year-old also played for SuperSport United, Mpumalanga Black Aces, Chippa United and Cape Umoya, among other teams, in his 13-year career in the PSL.
