Injured Williams racing against time for Afcon qualifiers

Injured Bafana Bafana and SuperSport United skipper Ronwen Williams is in a race against time to be fit for the opening 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier set for May 30.

Bafana are in Group K with neighbours Zimbabwe, Morocco and Liberia and will face one of those teams at the end of the month.

However, the injury blow could force him to miss the start of the 2023 campaign. Williams picked up an injury on April 23 when Matsatsantsa played Marumo Gallants in a DStv Premiership clash.

On Tuesday, as the Pretoria side played a goalless draw against Stellenbosch, Williams was in the stands with a follow-up surgery scheduled for Thursday.

SuperSport interim coach Andre Arendse is confident his captain may feature in the season’s final game against Orlando Pirates on 21 May.

“Ronwen will start training very soon again. Whether he will be ready in time to play a game depends on him and his recovery and the rate of his recovery. But we will have him back before the end of the season. We’ll have to monitor and see how quickly he recovers,” Arendse told FARPost

The 2023 AFCON is set to take place between June and July of next year in Ivory Coast. The first two matchdays of the qualifiers are set to take place between 30 May and 14 June. Matchdays three and four will then be held between 19 and 27 September. The final two rounds will take place between 20 and 28 March 2023.
