Leo Thethani bounces back after two-year break from football

Ajax Cape Town academy graduate Leo Thethani has bounced back, joining a Motsepe Foundation Championship side, after a two-year break from football.

The talented attacking midfielder has resurfaced at Cape Town Spurs as he looks to revive his career. Thethani broke into the scene with the Urban Warriors in 2015 at the U17 Engen Champ of Champs, where he won the top goal scorer accolade.

After taking a break from football due to ‘personal reasons’, FARPost can confirm the 23-year-old will be playing his football in the second tier of South African football next season.

The midfield sensation was part of the Ajax Amsterdam youth side before being promoted to the senior team but never made any impact due to the Covid-19 Lockdown.

“Things were going well for me, and I was just about to play in the first team at Ajax Amsterdam, and Covid came. They didn’t renew my contract. I took a much-needed break because of personal stuff.

“I lost my football mentor and family members in a short space of time, it was just too hard for me mentally, but I feel like the break helped me a lot because now I think I’ve grown as a player, now I’m ready to go back to the field and showcase my talent,” said the highly-motivated Thethani.

After over two years without playing professional football, the Cape Town-born star is ready to play football again. “I’ve never seen Leo this motivated, and I think South Africa is yet to see the best of him. I can say he is one of the best wingers we have in the country, and I must say he is very excited about his new chapter,” said a source close to the player.

The Shaun Bartlett-coached team have so far beefed up their squad with talented forward Boitumelo Radiopane from Orlando Pirates on season-long loan deal, Maurice Finck, Jayden Petersen, and veterans Clayton Daniels and Michael Morton who are going to be vital for the team as they seek to gain promotion to the elite league.
