Maritzburg show interest in former Baroka player

Maritzburg United have shown interest in former Baroka forward Richard Mbulu as the team continues to beef up their squad for the upcoming season.

According to a reliable source, the KZN club enquired about the availability of the Malawian international this week. “The club enquired about Mbulu and were told that he’s a free agent,” a source told FARPost.

The Malawian international was released by Baroka last month after the team got relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Despite failing to help his team to maintain their top-flight status, Mbulu made 23 appearances for Vincent Kobola’s side in the DStv Premiership and scored four goals while contributing just one assist.

The 28-year-old forward joined Bakgakga in the 2019/20 season and established himself as a regular starter for the Limpopo-based side, making no less than 20 appearances in every season he played in the team for the past three years.

The former Baroka attacker was part of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon as The Flames were knocked out of the competition by Morocco in the last 16.

The Team of Choice will be looking to improve from their disappointing form last season, which saw them finish outside the top 8.

With John Maduka appointed a new coach since the sacking of well-travelled Ernest Middendorp, there’s a positive air around the Pietermaritzburg side’s camp.

The former Bloemfontein Celtic mentor, Maduka, guided Royal AM to a top three finish in the DStv Premiership in their maiden season and qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup.

Thwihli Thwahla are now under the tutelage of Khabo Zondo and will be looking to continue from where they left off last season.

Meanwhile, Maritzburg on Friday announced three new signings. Siboniso Conco, Brian Hlongwa and Tshidiso Monomodi were unveiled ahead of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season.
