Mpengesi withdraws from Safa presidential race

Chippa Mpengesi has withdrawn his candidacy for the South African Football Association [Safa].

The Chippa United chairman had vowed to throw his hat in the ring to challenge the incumbent Danny Jordaan.

However, Mpengesi on Thursday released a statement to the effect that he would no longer run for the plum position.

“When I decided to challenge for Safa elections in the upcoming Congress. It was never about getting the position at all costs; it was about working with all Football leaders to better football development,” reads Mpengesi’s statement.

“I was pushed by my passion to be involved at the grassroots level. It was about mobilising resources to equip football administrators to better the game.”

He further said that he had decided to no longer contest the elections after careful consideration. He said he had agreed to continue working with the Safa regions as he has previously done.

“I will seek to work with the Safa leadership that emerges on many programs aimed at improving the lives of youngsters on the ground level.”

Mpengesi revealed that the Safa NEC resolved that PSL club chairman were not eligible to stand for Presidency.

He assured the regions that encouraged him to challenge Jordaan that he would continue to assist in football development in the country.

The date for the elective congress has tentatively been set for June 25, subject to the approval of the NEC.
