Onyango tips fellow teammate to be patient

Mamelodi Sundowns number one goalkeeper Dennis Onyango has urged fourth choice shot-stopper Ricardo Goss to be patient as his time at the club will come.

In the past weeks, rumours were circulating that the 28-year-old is trying to force a loan move out of Sundowns to get more game time.

The former Uganda skipper who joined Masandawana in 2011 from Mpumalanga Black Aces but struggled for game time at Chloorkop until he was sent out on loan to Bidvest Wits.

“Its quite difficult to come to a team like Sundowns and break in immediately, I came to Sundowns in 2011 and I couldn’t even play a single game because there was Wayne Sandilands and Calvin Marlin, Kennedy [Mweene] came in, then I was sent on loan,” Onyango told the media.

“He [Ricardo Goss] just needs to stay focused and take his chance when he’s given the opportunity. He has had one or two opportunities, he played in the league, champions league and the Nedbank Cup so he must give his best whenever given the opportunity and be patient because he’s a young man.”

“I started playing regularly when I was 29-30, Goss is younger than that, Reyaad [Pieterse] just started playing few games and he’s clocking 30, so it’s a little bit of patience and being ready for your opportunity because opportunity will always come. I can get a red card or injuries like I’ve been doing the past season. You are thrown into the team and you must deliver.”

The 37-year-old gave an example of Tebogo Mokoena when he joined the 2021/22 treble winning champions.

“He must be patient, all the players that come to Sundowns from other teams were regulars from their previous teams, but they come and wait like Tebogo [Mokoena]. He played regularly at Supersport United, but played a few games here, so its difficult to break into Sundowns even if you were a regular to your previous team,” he concluded.
