Overloaded Bakkie carrying 24 kills two local footballers, 22 injured

A local football club from Lulekani in Limpopo, Korea of God FC, were involved in a fatal accident which left two of their team players dead, while 22 were injured near Selwane Village in the Mopani district on Saturday evening.

It is believed the club which plays in the local SAFA LFA League in Lulekani were on their way back from a soccer tournament when the driver of the overloaded Bakkie carrying 24 players, lost control and overturned.

Two of the players died on the scene while the driver and two others sustained serious injuries and 19 others escaped with minor injuries.

The injured were taken to Maphuta Malatji hospital.

SAFA Mopani President Vincent Ramphago has confirmed that the region is aware of the accident but revealed that the tournament was not sanctioned by the football mother body.

“The region is so disturbed by this type of accidents. We always encourage teams or clubs to play in SAFA leagues. I don’t say that there is no accident or death case in SAFA, but SAFA plays a vital role in caring for players,” he said.

“We also encourage teams to use taxis or cars that are safe and avoid overloading. Our profound condolences to the entire bereaved families. Wishing the injured ones a speedy recovery,” added Ramphago.
