Pirates defender staying put

Despite signing two new defenders, Tapelo Xoki and Nkosinathi Sibisi, from AmaZulu and Golden Arrows, Orlando Pirates have handed one of their defenders a contract extension, writes Robert Matakanye.

Happy Jele’s contract was set to expire at the end of this month, but FARPost can reveal that Pirates have exercised the option of extending his contract for a further year.

According to an official close to the club, Jele will remain a Pirates player until June 2023, after triggering their year option.

“Jele’s contract was set to expire in June, but the club has an option, which has since been exercised, and the player is staying with Pirates next season,” says the official.

‘Magents’, as he is affectionately known, joined the Buccaneers in 2006 and remains the club’s longest-serving player.

Jele is currently the club’s captain and is seen as the epitome of what the Soweto giants are all about.
