Royal AM out to continue Soweto dominance

It’s a battle of unfinished business at Moses Mabhida Stadium tonight when Royal AM host Orlando Pirates in the DStv Premiership.

Interestingly, both teams are coming from defeats and would want to quickly bounce back.

This is one of the most exciting fixtures and looks set to attract a good crowd.

Thwihli Thwahla has enjoyed a good record against the Soweto giants, as they are yet to be beaten by both Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.

This season, they’ve already broken the hearts of the Amakhosi faithful in the first match of the season at Chatsworth Stadium.

They followed that up by beating Chippa United away from home in their second match of the season.
However, last weekend they succumbed to their first loss against Stellenbosch away from home.

On the other hand, the Buccaneers have had a very slow start in their opening games. They’ve beaten Swallows FC and drew against Stellenbosch before losing to Chippa United at home, a game which coach Jose Riveiro felt they had more chances than the opponents.

He will be hoping they convert their chances against the Durban outfit on Wednesday night.

His assistant Mandla Ncikazi said: “That loss in the previous match was a good game without points but it’s important that when we go to Royal AM – it’s a good team. But it’s important that we must start getting points and a win against Royal AM is important.”

This clash was supposed to be played at Chatsworth stadium but due to the concerns about the safety of supporters, a decision was taken to move it to Moses Mabhida.

This comes after complaints were raised about hosting big games in the small venue.

Both teams are meeting for the third time after the KZN outfit bought the status of Bloemfontein Celtic last season.

In the first encounter, it ended in a 1-1 draw at Orlando Stadium and second leg a 2-2 draw as Pirates’ dream of playing in the CAF Champions League was crashed.

It is expected that the visitors will be aiming to pay revenge after last season’s heartbreak while the hosts look to add more woes for Soweto.
