Safranko claims fierce competition helps Downs thrive

Mamelodi Sundowns striker Pavol Safranko claims that when you’re ruled out for just one day at the club, “the next four guys” are waiting to grab their chance.

The Slovakian highlighted the fierce competition for starting places at Sundowns, citing it as the reason the club continues to soar high.

The 27-year-old has just returned from injury and is fighting to get back into the starting line-up. On Saturday, he came on as a sub when Downs thrashed third-tier side Summerfield Dynamos 5-0, getting a goal for himself.

“Sundowns is not a small team, we have very good players, and if you’re out for even one day, the next four guys are waiting for their chance, and they will play well. It’s not that easy to come back, but I will do my best and work hard,” he told the club’s website.

Safranko praised the technical team for the incredible job after they outclassed Dynamos.

“Credit must go to the coaching staff, as well as the analysts, because when we watched this team’s videos, they said in the set-pieces, more especially the free kicks, the far post is always free, so I was thinking about it and Gaston gave me the perfect pass, and it was not so hard to score from this,” he added.

Safranko will be aiming to continue his scoring form when the defending DStv Premiership champions take on Golden Arrows on Tuesday, where they’ll be looking to extend their lead at the top of the log standings.
