Struggling Zimbabwean giants seek reprieve in coveted Chibuku Super Cup

Wounded Zimbabwean giants Caps United and Highlanders have been presented with a golden opportunity to make rich pickings in the prestigious Chibuku Super Cup, away from their woeful league campaigns.

The first round of this cup competition is slated for this weekend.

Of the three Zimbabwean traditional giants, only Dynamos has been riding high as they are contending for the PSL title ahead of the 2022 edition of the knockout tournament.

For Caps United, their campaign has been headlined by financial challenges and that has had a ripple effect on the teams performance as they sit on 12th position, just seven points above from the relegation zone.

Highlanders on the otherhand have struggled to strike the right chords despite a healthy purse and a top class coach Baltemar Brito, formerly Jose Mourinho’s assistant at Inter Milan and Chelsea.

The Portuguese gaffer is under pressure end a four year winless away record.

They travel to face lowveld side Triangle, with Caps United face armyside, Black Rhinos in Harare.

“For us, this was the best half we have had so far since we came and this means that the players are growing.

“We are always repeating that it’s a process and we are happy that we had a very good first half, now we need to do 50 minutes, 60 minutes, 70 minutes, 80 minutes and we will eventually win,” Brito told Journalists after their weekend draw against Herentals.

Caps United’s William Manondo is the leading goal scorer in the league with 13 goals to his name and coach Llyod Chitembwe is confident of better strides in the Chibuku Cup.

“We are growing in confidence. It’s where we are coming from that gives us confidence. We will fight but it’s obviously going to be a tough terrain. Cup games are always tricky so we are going to approach the match with a cautious mentality. We play to win all,” the former Zimbabwe assistant coach told FARPost.

FC Platinum are the current holders of the Chibuku Super Cup and ex-Chippa United coach Norman Mapeza will hope to maintain the team’s stranglehold in the annual tournament.
