The 2022 KZN Premier’s Cup roars to life

The KZN Premier’s Cup returns following yet another successful tournament last year. The launch was conducted on Tuesday featuring the province’s six teams that play in DStv Premiership and the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

The two-day competition which will be played on the last weekend of July and will be held at two different stadiums. On July 30th, it will be held at King Zwelithini Stadium and on July 31st the final showdown will be at Harry Gwala Stadium.

KZN MEC of Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation Hlengiwe Mavimbela who was present at the launch believes such tournaments are of important in helping teams prepare for the upcoming season.

“With five teams in the Premiership ranks, we are envied by other provinces and some have come here to benchmark on how we do things. We want to maintain this status quo and to continually improve,” Mavimbela said in a statement.

“The contribution of this tournament in helping our teams to finalise their pre-season preparations is there for all of us to see.”

Following Tuesday’s draw, Golden Arrows and AmaZulu proceeded automatically to the semi finals. In the first round matches, DStv Premiership newcomers Richards Bay FC will take on Royal AM while Motsepe Foundation Championship side Uthongathi will face last year’s champions Maritzburg United.

The winners of the respective Saturday matches will then meet in the semi final on Sunday. The semi finals will be played at 09:00 and 12:00 respectively. Final is at 16:00.

The MEC also revealed that each team will be awarded R625 000 as tournament participation fee. Entrance to the stadiums will also be free to supporters.
