Usuthu close in on ex-Chiefs star as they begin squad rebuild

Amazulu FC have wasted no time bringing in new faces to beef up their squad after releasing 15 players on Thursday.

Usuthu have completed the signing of Augustine Kwem on a three-year deal and Chippa United defender Veluyeke Zulu. The Durban outfit is set to conclude the capture of former Kaizer Chiefs star Dumisani Zuma and Orlando Pirates out-of-favour striker Gabadinho Mhango who is believed to be part of a swap deal that sees Tapelo Xoki join the Sea Robbers.

Mhango, who scored twice as the Flames beat Ethiopia 2-1 on Sunday, already hinted a switch was imminent when speaking to Malawi FA’s Mpira TV: “There is change [a transfer], but it is not finalised yet. The manager is working on that. Obviously, it is good to start a new lease of life and open a new chapter.

Usuthu chairman Sandile Zungu also pointed out Zuma would be one of the club’s new signings. “Next week, we’ll be able to announce and inform the public which players will be joining AmaZulu,” he told Andile Ncube on Sports Night Amplified.

“Among those players, maybe people that soccer public is familiar with, with have played in the PSL, and some may be great names that South Africa is familiar with who come from other leagues. Including Dumisani Zuma, who may feature or who may not feature.”

Brandon Truter’s side is also eyeing Simba SC midfielder Larry Bwalya and is expected to bring in more players as the club builds a trophy-winning team next season.

Mhango made five appearances for the Buccaneers in the just-ended season despite an impressive run at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon earlier this year. On the other hand, Zuma only managed three games and scored on one occasion for Amakhosi in the just-ended DStv Premiership season.

The pair will be looking to hit the ground running in the upcoming season for the Durban-based side as they’ll be looking to bring their careers back on track.
