Why Chippa Mpengesi hates co-coaching trend

Chippa United Chairman Siviwe Mpengesi has revealed why he hates the growing trend of co-coaching in the DStv Premiership.

Mpengesi, known for being trigger-happy when results are not forthcoming for his team, stresses that having more than one coach at the helm will result in a lack of accountability.

“Yeah, it works for other clubs, but I don’t think it will work for Chippa United because, at the end of the day, you need someone to account.

“So it’s always difficult to have three people because the accountability is going to be problematic, but it’s good for clubs who go that route, and I don’t see us as Chippa United going that route,” the chairman told the media.

The Chilli Boys are known for their impulsive chopping and changing of coaches, with 34 coaches going through the revolving door at the club in the last 10 years.

Mamelodi Sundowns were the first club to introduce the co-coaching system after their head coach Pitso Mosimane left to join Egyptian giants Al Ahly.

Rulani Mokoena and Manqoba Mngqithi were appointed joint coaches for Masandawana in 2020, with Steve Komphela named senior coach.

Orlando Pirates followed the trend when Mandla Ncikazi and Fladlu Davids took over from Josef Zinnbauer. The latter resigned from his position after a poor run of form at the beginning of the 2020/21 campaign.

Sekhukhune United and Royal AM were the latest to join. Babina Noko brought Owen Da Gama to join McDonald’s Makhubedu and Thabo Senong. At the same time, the Shauwn Mkhize-owned club recently welcomed Dan Malesela to work with Khabo Zondo in the coaching department.

Da Gama has since left the Limpopo side on mutual agreement in the off-season.

Meanwhile, the Gqeberha-based side chairman promised his 34th coach Daine Klate to give him more time to settle in as a coach and instil his philosophy to build a competitive team.

“I will give him all the necessary support to do well because it will be a good story of having achieved what he has achieved as a player now; we want him to achieve as a coach.”
