Why Tembo is not pleased despite first win

Sekhukhune United might have collected their first set of maximum points in the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season, but coach Kaitano Tembo is far from impressed.

A late first-half strike by new signing Tashreeq Morris ensured Babina Noko beat Golden Arrows 1-0 at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday evening.

It was their first maximum points after playing to a disappointing draw against Maritzburg United in their first match. The result places them fifth on the log with four points from two rounds of matches.

Only Richards Bay, Royal AM, Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu are clubs above them.

“There is still a lot for us to improve, but we will get better because you could see that the decision-making in the final third was also not there. But those are the things we can pick up and say. You know what, we have to go back and work on them,” Tembo told reporters after the match.

“You can see that we are still a bit disjointed in certain faces where we are not playing as a team because it’s a completely new team, new players, as well. So, there is still a lot of work to be done, but I am happy with the result but not completely with the performance.

“I thought we started very well, especially in the first 10 minutes we got into good areas, but I would say that we played in patches whereby some point we were very good and at some point, we were bad, not so good,” he said.

“Of course, it’s very good (the win), but at the same time, I have to look at the performance because it will give me a clear indication of where we are as a team.”

Tembo was also impressed with the huge support they received in Polokwane during their first official match at home.

“Brilliant. I think they kept on pushing us. This is what we missed in Maritzburg, whereby the last 10 minutes where we needed our fans to drive us and push us to see off the game, and they did that today, it was Brilliant. We are quite happy with that, and we really missed them in Maritzburg.”

Sekhukhune will next travel to the King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium for their league encounter against Richards Bay on Saturday, 13 August.
