Zambia, SA to renew rivalry as Downs, Buffaloes clash

Green Buffaloes and Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies will renew hostiles in Saturday’s Hollywoodbets COSAFA Women’s Champions League Zonal Qualifier final.

The Zonal Qualifier final clash will be played at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium at 15:30 in the afternoon.

Downs Ladies had to wait till the last day of Group A encounter between Mozambique’s Costa do Sol and Double Action Ladies of Botswana to decide who are the group winners to face Buffaloes in the finals.

Double Action needed to win their game by eight goals clear in order to leapfrog Banyana Ba Style but only managed to win their match with a 2-0 scoreline over Costa do Sol.

The red-hot Brazilians Banyana have already qualified for the 2022 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League as they are the current title holders which made the Zambian side secure a spot in the Champions League.

It’s difficult to make a definitive prediction given the fact that the two teams have had a good run in the tournament so far, but the defending champions have the upper hand given their experience in the continental competition.

However, Buffaloes don’t have an impressive history in the COSAFA Zonal Qualifiers against Sundowns. They lost to the Tshwane-based outfit in the semi-finals of the last year’s edition.

The CAF Women’s Champions League is set to take place in Morocco later this year.

The visitor’s head coach Charles Haalubono made it clear that he wants to face Sundowns in the finals during his post-match interview following their 4-0 win over Comoros’ Olympic De Moroni on Tuesday. Haalubono is keen to send the defending champions to the cleaners when both sides clash in order to take his revenge.

“I want to face Sundowns in the finals because they beat us last time in the semi-finals and you know Sundowns is the biggest team in Africa,” Haalubono told the media.

“If you want to be the best you have to play with the best. So, we should learn from Sundowns because that’s what I believe in.

“They will be able to give us good lessons, that’s just my prayer.”
