Zwane wants ‘arrogant, self-assured’ players at Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Arthur Zwane believes the Soweto giants need arrogant, self-assured players to lord it over the domestic league once again. Chiefs have not won any major silverware in the last seven years, and the current season has been no different.

Zwane insists the club must bring in the right players who are fighters next season to restore the team’s glory days and dignity.  “We need to get players of high quality, good technically and tactically, good on and off the ball, and very arrogant on the ball, whether a defender, midfielder or striker. If we are to have players that have low self-esteem and don’t have the self-belief that they can make things happen, those are not players for Kaizer Chiefs,” said Zwane.

“We want players who have an eagerness to win and players who express themselves because we give them freedom of expression within the structure of Chiefs in terms of game approach.” After losing to Cape Town City at home last month, the former Amakhosi winger laid into the players, saying some were “not good enough” for the club. This time, he went on to say the club could not afford to play ‘boring football’.

“We need players who believe in themselves because as a club, we cannot play boring football. We want our supporters to come to the stadium; we have a massive following. We have to make sure we strike a balance in terms of getting the results.”

The 48-year-old, however, anticipates that it will be difficult to get the right players as few can have Chiefs character but insists that the club won’t rest until they get them.

“We’ll keep hunting until we get the right players. Unfortunately, they are not too many because you might find out they are good in terms of skills but don’t have the character to play for Chiefs as it demands someone who comes with the responsibility of playing for this club. We’ll keep hunting with the hope of getting them as that will make life easy on the incoming coach.”
