Downs beat 10-man Chippa at home

Goals from Andile Jali and Teboho Mokoena handed Mamelodi Sundowns a 2-0 win over Chippa United in their DStv Premiership encounter at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Monday night.

The Brazilians looked bright coming out of their comfortable 4-0 win against Richards Bay in the Nedbank Cup tournament last Friday.

Downs continued to control the game well but sat back a little bit.

But there was some positivity from the Chilli Boys, however, Sundowns’ defence was too strong for them. In the 24th minute, Siphesihle Mkhize was shown a red card after a crunching tackle on Thabiso Kutumela in the middle of the park.

Momentum swung back in Masandawana’s favour, as they pushed forward in numbers searching for an opener.

Bafana Ba Style finally broke the deadlock through Andile Jali in the 44th minute of the contest.

The showpiece went to the half-time break with Chippa trailing behind by 1-0.

The second half started in a similar pattern, with Thapelo Morena turning on the magic in the box and beating three players, and sets up Kutumela who saw his strike blocked out for a corner.

The intensity and pace grew drastically from Downs and their chances were getting further away from the target.

Kurt Lentjies’ men had been totally floored when it comes to ball position as they were searching the ball with a torch.

In the 87th minute, Masandawana’s newly signed midfielder Teboho Mokoena added to the scoreline just a few minutes after he came in from the bench.

In the end, the two goals were good enough to earn Sundowns maximum points at home.
